Programs and Courses

The Powell River Recreation Complex offers a variety of programs and courses for Seniors including Homemade Probiotics workshop, Beginner Guitar, Line Dancing, and picking & selling Salal. You can download the latest copy of their magazine Active Living Guide, or pick one up from the reception desk.

The Powell River Library offers many programs  for Seniors. Books on Wheels will deliver books to your home every Wednesday  to Powell River residents who are unable to go to the Library due to illness or infirmity. Phone Susan at the Library, 604 485 8667,  for more information.
Seniors living outside the city boundaries can take advantage of  Books by Mail by calling Mark at 604 485 8667

ElderCollege is an opportunity for people 50+ to engage in classes for self-development and fun.

Powell River Garden Club meets at the Senior's Centre at 7:00 pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month except July, August, and December.

Powell River Genealogy Club meets at the Senior's Centre at 7.00 pm on the 4th Sunday of the month, except July, August, and December. Guests are welcome.

Malaspina Naturalists Club is a group of people who are fascinated by the flora, fauna and geology surrounding Powell River. Meetings are held at 7:30 pm on the 3rd or 4th Thursday from September to May. Contact the club through their website, or by phoning 604 485 0077

Malaspina Camera Club meets at 7 pm on the third Wednesday of each month in the community room at Westview Elementary School. For more information contact Niels Voss at 604 485 6963 or Steven Grover 604 485 5333.

People in Pain Support Group meets at Powell River General Hospital from 2 pm to 4 pm on the 1st Wednesday of each month. The meeting room is downstairs, next to the cafeteria.

Powell River Parkinson's Support Group is a self-help group with discussions, information, speakers, and social events.
Meetings are held at 1.30 pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the United Church hall.

Active Living

The Powell River Recreation Complex offers a variety of programs and courses for Seniors including Aquacises, Fitness classes, Table Tennis, Yoga for men, Yoga for 55+ and Zumba Gold for 50+. You can download the latest copy of their magazine Active Living Guide, or pick one up from the reception desk.

Nourish Yoga is offering a practical approach to Hatha yoga which is suitable for all seniors. The focus is to increase senior's range of motion and improve balance, strength, and general well-being.

Powell River Hiking Group is comprised of retirees, mostly 65+, though all ages are welcome. Hikes take place on Wednesday & Sunday.
A hiking schedule is available on their website, and at the Powell River Visitor's Centre, 4760 Joyce Avenue.
All hikes begin at 10 am and can take from 2.5 to 4 hours to complete.

Powell River Yacht Club invites men and women to crew boats during fun races, from 9 am to 1 pm Saturdays. Meet at the picnic tables beside ferry terminal parking lot by 8.30 am. Anyone in reasonable shape and wishing to learn to sail is welcome.

Paddling for Life Society Dragon Boat Team welcomes both women and men to paddle Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 5:30 pm, April through September, at the Shingle Mill dock. For more information call Eva Dobozy at 604 485 9280 or Barb Behan at 604 485 2970.

Powell River Lawn Bowling Club. Lawn bowling triples takes place at 7 pm Tuesdays and Saturdays, from May to Sept 30th at the Townsite greens, 5714 Marine Avenue. Persons wishing to play should call 604 414 0890 between 6 and 6:30 pm to register for the evening draws.

The Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) program helps make rents affordable for BC seniors with low to moderate incomes. SAFER provides monthly cash payments to subsidize rents for eligible BC residents who are age 60 or over and who pay rent for their homes.
BC Housing provides SAFER subsidies to more than 17,000 senior households renting apartments in the private market, including singles, couples and people sharing a unit. Visit their website for more information.

Red Cross HELP (Health Equipment Loan Program) is located on Level 1 of the hospital, and is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 2 pm. With a referral from a registered health care professional, seniors may borrow walkers, wheelchairs and other medical equipment for up to three months.

Powell River Kiwanis Lifeline is a volunteer group who provide a home medical alert system for elderly people living alone, or who have a medical disability.

Better at Home. Their mandate is to provide services that help seniors continue living in their homes. Phone Serena Ross 604 413 0762 for more information.

Home Support Services, a division of Vancouver Coastal Health, helps people with on-going health conditions to remain in their homes and to be as independent and safe as possible. These services cannot replace the support from family, friends or community organizations but rather add to, or supplement it. Support and relief for primary caregivers is also available. Powell River Home Care, led by RN Michelle McIntosh, offers a variety of services to seniors including light housekeeping, preparing meals, and performing personal care.
